Sewing students Veronica Heysquierdo and Adriana Galvan are hard at work creating a new project at SA Sewing Studio.

And sew on and sew forth.

Sheila Abigail is taking life one stitch at a time with her new business, SA Sewing Studio.

Specializing in sewing, alterations, custom garments and personalized gifts, the new studio is located at 515 N. Virginia St., Suite B, in Port Lavaca. Residents are welcome to learn to sew during classes offered to the community from Abigail and Crossroads Art House owner, Claire Santellana.

"Since starting my classes one week ago, I have had a lot of people interested in learning the basic sewing skills and alterations," said Abigail. "I think people are interested in sewing classes because it's a good skill to know and a type of art you can use to create and express yourself."

Participants will learn to thread a sewing machine, the basic sewing stitches and how to make various projects in a variety of new classes.

"Working in this industry, it's hard to find other creatives that do what I do. I want to open up SA Sewing Studio to those that are wanting to unleash their creativity," said Abigail. "I want to create a place people go to, to create, whether it's sewing, photography, videography, painting or drawing; these sewing classes are just the beginning of what SA Sewing Studio plans to offer to the community of Calhoun County."

Abigail said that her passion is creating. Beginner and intermediate classes are offered from 9-10 a.m. or 6-7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. The fee is $65 per week. Children, ages 9 and up, are welcome to participate.

Friday Sip-N-Sew sessions are from 9-10 a.m., 6-7 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Participants are asked to bring their own beverages to enjoy while sewing. The fee to participate is $35 per session.

"You do not have to know how to sew. Beginners are welcomed and are required to take the Monday or Wednesday Beginner I & II classes before participating in Sip N Sew, Intermediate classes or buy a open studio membership," said Abigail.

Materials are provided for beginner, intermediate and Sip-N-Sew classes.

Open studio membership is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The membership fee is $70 per month and includes all three days. Open studio members must bring their own materials, but are free to use all the equipment in the studio, including scissors, rulers, embroidery machines, etc. Sewing machines are provided. However, there is currently a limit of four per class. Items sewn can be taken home, but will be posted on social media.

"I want people to feel the joy of creating something with your hands and then gifting it to someone, wearing it or even starting a side hustle and offering the Open studio members a platform to sell what they create," she said.

Abigail is sponsoring Tabree Houston, Ms. Curve Texas for the Ms. Curve Regency International Pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada in July. She will be creating nine custom designs to be worn throughout the pageant. Abigail said she will also travel to Las Vegas to support her client throughout the pageant, network and meet other potential clients. Donations of jeans and materials for the designs are being accepted for the pageant.

SA Sewing Studio is hosting a launch party and fashion show to showcase her new Recycled Denim Collection of 2023 and to welcome Crossroads Art House (art classes) to the studio on June 10. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Entry is a voluntary donation, "pay what you can" at the door. A meet and greet will begin at 7 p.m. to meet the owners and learn about services offered. A swag bag handout filled with sponsor merchandise for fashion show participants will take place at 8 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis. The fashion show competition will begin at 8:30 p.m. Participants are asked to come in their best outfit, walk the runway and enter to win a limited edition bear or pillow from giftamemory.com. Abigail will showcase her recycled denim collection at 9 p.m., with pieces available for purchase.
